Canadian trademark fees: a practical 2026 filing budget
Separate the government application fee from research, preparation and professional assistance. Use these dated examples to budget for a Canadian online application.
The short answer
For an online application paid through CIPO in 2026, the government fee is CAD $491.06 for the first class and $149.04 for each additional class. One class totals $491.06; two total $640.10; three total $789.14. These are application-fee examples, not all-inclusive service quotes.
CIPO also lists 2027 online rates: $499.41 for the first class and $151.57 for each additional class. For adjusted fees, the date the Registrar receives payment matters. Confirm the official schedule when paying, especially around year-end.
Build your budget in three separate lines
First, estimate the official application fee using the proposed class count. Second, choose the research or preparation service you actually need. Third, identify any separate professional work that might be necessary and request its scope and price in writing.
Markframe’s service charges are separate from government filing fees. Use our current pricing page for the available packages rather than adding an old advertised price to a filing estimate. Check any applicable taxes and separately quoted extras at checkout or in the engagement terms.
A useful personal worksheet has columns for item, payee, amount, included work and payment date. That makes it much harder to mistake a preparation purchase for money already paid to CIPO.
Choose scope before optimizing the price
Do not select a class count only because a smaller number looks cheaper. Start with what the business actually offers and establish the appropriate wording and grouping. The Goods and Services Manual helps identify acceptable terms and their classes.
A hypothetical planning example
Imagine a founder whose draft scope has been checked and falls into two classes. The 2026 online application-fee line is $640.10. The founder then adds the chosen preparation service as a separate line and keeps any quoted professional follow-up separate again.
The useful output is not merely a grand total. It is a clear answer to ‘What have I paid for, what remains payable, and who is responsible for the next step?’ If scope changes before filing, revisit the estimate instead of silently carrying forward the old number.
Your practical checklist
- Confirm the payment year and online filing channel.
- Count classes from the proposed goods/services, not from guesses.
- Separate government payments from service purchases.
- Check inclusions, applicable taxes and any separately quoted work.
- Save receipts and record whether the application has actually been submitted.
Common questions
Does a Markframe report purchase pay my CIPO fee?
No. A report or preparation service is separate from the government fee. Review the chosen service’s scope and the filing-payment arrangements before proceeding.
Is the lowest class count always the best choice?
No. The objective is a suitable description of the business, not the smallest possible number. Do not remove relevant activities solely to make the estimate look lower.
Can I use this estimate next year?
Recheck it. The 2026 and 2027 rates above are deliberately separated, and future adjustments may change the amount due.
